Sugarloaf Fire Rescue

We at Sugarloaf Fire Rescue or, as we are technically known, the Sugar Loaf Key Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., are the only all-volunteer, privately owned Fire Department in the Florida Keys. We still own, operate and maintain our own Station at Mile Marker 17 on the Overseas Highway, which is also US Route 1. The Station was built by our founding members on land donated for this community purpose. Because the Station and the land on which it sits are owned by our Florida not-for-profit corporation, we receive no financial assistance from Monroe County toward its upkeep and repair.

There are only two other Fire Departments further south down the Overseas Highway: Big Coppitt and the City of Key West. The Big Coppitt Department is staffed by both volunteers and career personnel from Monroe County Fire Rescue and operates two stations, one on Big Coppitt Key and one on Stock Island. The City of Key West Fire Department is an all-career department. This makes us the Southernmost Volunteer Fire Department™ in the entire United States.
